The boats race around the clock until they reach Mackinac Island. So the crew members have to sail at night also.

Storms are a factor and common on Lake Michigan, so all the participating crew are recommended to be equipped to handle them.

These storms can be very rough and the Mac Safety Regulations would like everyone to be prepared to handle any adverse circumstances a storm can bring. Therefore this race pays close attention to the safety of its sailors, and crew members.

The Mac Safety Regulations (MSRs) recommends that those who are participating in the race attend a US Sailing Safety at Sea seminar for 30 percent of all crew on the boat within the last 5 years. More so, all of the crew members are recommended to take this safety training class.
